Traffic Stops: A Calm Script That Protects Your Rights
Adrenaline spikes fast. A short script helps you stay clear, respectful, and safe.

Roll your window down, turn off the radio, and keep both hands visible on the wheel. Move slowly if you’re reaching for your wallet or registration. Use a steady voice—your goal is clarity, not debate.
Script: “Officer, am I being detained, or am I free to go?”
If you’re free to go, leave calmly. If you’re detained or placed under arrest, switch to the rights script and then stop discussing facts.
Rights script: “I choose to remain silent. I want a lawyer. I don’t consent to any searches.”
Practical do’s
- Keep your documents in a consistent, easy-to-reach place.
- Tell the officer what you’re doing before you move (“My registration is in the glove box; I’m going to reach slowly.”).
- If asked to consent to a search, it’s okay to say, “I don’t consent.”
- After the stop, write down time, location, unit or badge numbers (if visible), and what was said.
Common pitfalls
- Talking to “explain everything.” Stress creates contradictions—save the details for your lawyer.
- Arguing roadside law. Be respectful; legal challenges happen later.
- Posting play-by-plays online. Keep updates private and factual.
